Ingredients:

For the Mozzarella Sticks:

  • 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup Italian seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking spray

For Serving:

  • Marinara sauce
  • Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Mozzarella Sticks

Start by unwrapping the mozzarella string cheese sticks and cutting each in half to create 24 smaller sticks.

Place them on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 1 hour. Freezing helps the cheese maintain its shape during cooking and prevents it from melting too quickly.

2. Set Up the Breading Station

While the cheese sticks freeze, prepare your breading station. In one shallow bowl, place the all-purpose flour. In a second bowl, whisk together the eggs and water until well combined.

In a third bowl, mix the panko breadcrumbs, Italian seasoned breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.

3. Bread the Mozzarella Sticks

Once the cheese sticks are frozen, remove them from the freezer. Dip each stick into the flour, ensuring it is fully coated. Shake off any excess flour, then dip the stick into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.

Finally, coat the stick in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere the breadcrumbs. For an extra crispy coating, repeat the egg and breadcrumb steps. Place the breaded sticks back on the baking sheet and freeze for another 30 minutes.

4. Preheat the Air Fryer

Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes. Preheating ensures even cooking and a crispy exterior.

5. Cook the Mozzarella Sticks

Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Arrange the frozen mozzarella sticks in a single layer in the basket, making sure they do not touch.

Lightly spray the tops of the sticks with cooking spray as well. Air fry for 6–8 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Keep a close eye on them during the last few minutes to prevent the cheese from oozing out.

6. Serve and Enjoy

Carefully remove the mozzarella sticks from the air fryer and let them cool for a minute before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and serve with warm marinara sauce for dipping. Enjoy the crispy, gooey goodness!

Notes and Tips:

  • Freezing: Freezing the mozzarella sticks before cooking is crucial to prevent the cheese from melting too quickly.
  • Breading: Double breading ensures a thicker, crunchier coating. If you prefer a lighter coating, you can skip the second breading step.
  • Storage: Leftover mozzarella sticks can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3–4 minutes to restore their crispiness.
  • Customization: Feel free to experiment with different seasonings in the breadcrumb mixture, such as paprika or Italian herbs, to suit your taste.

These air-fried mozzarella sticks are a healthier alternative to traditional deep-fried versions, offering the same satisfying crunch and gooey cheese pull. They’re perfect for any occasion and sure to be a hit with both kids and adults alike.
